Irish Golf Team have won the Topaz Golf Triple Crown at a unique Special Olympics Event held today in Dublin over the past two days. Four Special Olympics Golf Teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales represented their countries in the Triple Crown Event which took place at Hollystown Golf Club in Dublin. This is the first time that all four teams have come together for a competitive tournament like this in what organisers Special Olympics Ireland have deemed “a momentous occasion in the calendar of Special Olympics Athletes”.
The event, hosted by Special Olympics Ireland was sponsored by Topaz Energy, owners of Shell and Statoil Licences in Ireland. Mary Davis, Director, Special Olympics and Danny Murray, Chief Executive, Topaz Energy attended the event to congratulate the winning athletes and pay tribute to everyone who took part .
Speaking at the event CEO of Topaz Energy, Danny Murray said that the company is delighted to be involved with the Special Olympics. “It was a great occasion with good sportsmanship, great talent and overwhelming enthusiasm from all those who took part. We are particularly delighted to be associated with the first ever Triple Crown Tournament held in Ireland and we congratulate most particularly the teams of athletes but also the staff and management of Topaz who acted as caddies and scorers. Everyone was generous with their encouragement in passing on tips to the athletes and we also picked up a few.”
Michael Forde, of Special Olympics Ireland, said that the Triple Crown event was a very exiting venture for the organisation, for athletes, supporters and coaches. Forde continued that the “event has given the athletes a competition to work towards to in the run up to the World Summer Games in China. It provided them with the opportunity to experience and practice on a competitive level, an opportunity which no doubt will stand to them as they compete in the World Games”.
The IRFU kindly added to the occasion by allowing the Triple Crown Trophy to showcase at the event.
